What makes a fitting GI

A GI fitting is a malleable iron fitting that has been galvanised: coated with zinc after casting and machining, so the zinc protects the iron wherever water, humidity or salt air reach it. The fitting underneath is the same malleable iron as the black version, made to EN 10242 / ISO 49 for BSP and to ASME B16.3 for NPT. That is why UAE price lists often write "MI GI fittings": MI names the material and GI the finish.

GI pipes and fittings: matching the fitting to the pipe

GI fittings are bought to join GI pipe, so the thread has to match the pipe. Galvanised steel pipe in the UAE is normally threaded BSP taper, and TUPY BSP fittings are cut to the same thread form, so a GI pipe from your usual stockist and a TUPY GI fitting make up together without adaptors. Where the pipe is threaded NPT, as on US-specified plant and some fire packages, order the NPT range instead.

Where GI fittings are used in the UAE

Galvanised fittings are the usual choice for domestic water, irrigation, fire sprinkler and hydrant lines, cooling-tower make-up and any run that is exposed outdoors or near the coast. Black fittings remain the usual choice for gas, steam and compressed air, and for fire lines that are painted after installation. Many UAE projects carry both, and one TUPY order can mix the two finishes figure by figure.

Coastal sites, humidity and the zinc coat

Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates combine high humidity with salt air for much of the year, and that is where uncoated iron rusts first. The zinc on a GI fitting corrodes in preference to the iron beneath it, so small wrench marks do not turn into rust at the thread. Keep fittings boxed and dry on site, and seal threads with a compound or tape suited to the service.

Genuine TUPY GI fittings and how to check them

Every TUPY fitting is cast with the TUPY name and its size on the body, and every consignment ships with its mill test certificate and certificate of origin. Copies sold as "TUPY type" carry neither. When a consultant asks for evidence, the figure number, the cast marking and the certificate answer it together.
