About the 45° Elbow

A 45° elbow is used on runs that need a change of direction without breaking the flow abruptly. Two 45° elbows in series make a smoother path than a single 90° elbow and cause less pressure loss.

This matters a great deal on pumped lines. A sharp change of direction causes turbulence and, in certain conditions, water hammer; using 45° elbows reduces that stress and extends the life of both the pipeline and the pump.

The TUPY 45° elbow is supplied as figure 120 and, like the rest of the range, is cast in malleable iron (MI). The threads are machined to BSP, based on EN 10242 and ISO 49.

It is available galvanised (hot-dip, for water and outdoor runs) and black (for steam, oil and dry environments), in sizes 1/4in to 6in.

TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.

What is the difference between the 90° elbow, the 45° elbow, the reducing elbow and the street elbow?

The figure 90 elbow turns the pipe run through 90° and is female at both ends. The figure 120 45° elbow is used for a gentler change of direction and a lower pressure drop. The figure 90R reducing elbow has two ends of different diameter, so it changes direction and diameter in one fitting. The figure 92 street elbow is male at one end and female at the other and screws straight into the next fitting without a socket; its 45° version is figure 121.

What is the maximum working pressure and temperature of TUPY fittings?

According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.
