Fire Protection Tee — TUPY Brazil fittings

The TUPY Brazil fire protection tee (figure 138) is made specifically for taking the hydrant valve branch off the main line. Unlike the usual method — a plain tee plus a reducing bush — it is one casting and leaves fewer weak points in the line.

About the Fire Protection Tee

In fire protection networks the hydrant branch is usually taken off the main pipe with a tee and a reducing bush together. That combination adds two extra threaded joints to the line and raises both the cost and the time of installation. TUPY casts the figure 138 fire protection tee in one piece for exactly this duty.

It is supplied in 4 x 2 1/2in (100 x 65 mm): two 4in run ends and a 2 1/2in branch for the hydrant valve. The material, as with the rest of the TUPY threaded range, is blackheart malleable cast iron to grade JMB 350-10, produced hot-dip galvanised and black.

The TUPY technical catalogue makes the same recommendation: for a fire protection branch, use the fire protection tee rather than a tee and a reducing bush.

Dimensions: factory code 1249059, a = 78, h = 105 and z = 51 mm. Weight per piece is 2.436 kg galvanised and 2.365 kg black.

This figure appears on TUPY's list of FM Approvals and UL Listed items — the documentation a contractor is asked for on fire protection projects.

Frequently asked questions about the Fire Protection Tee

In which sizes is the TUPY Brazil Fire Protection Tee made?

The TUPY Brazil Fire Protection Tee is made in 1 sizes, from 4"×2.1/2" to 4"×2.1/2". The full list of sizes, with the dimensions in millimetres and the weight of each piece, is in the dimensions and weights table on this page.

How much does one TUPY Fire Protection Tee weigh?

The weight depends on the size: the 4"×2.1/2" size, for example, weighs 2.436 kg galvanised and 2.365 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.

Is the thread on the TUPY Fire Protection Tee BSP or NPT?

TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.

What is the maximum working pressure and temperature of TUPY fittings?

According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.

To which standards is the TUPY Fire Protection Tee manufactured?

The TUPY Fire Protection Tee is manufactured to ABNT NBR B1/H. TUPY malleable cast iron fittings are built to ISO 49, EN 10242 and ABNT NBR 6943, and their threads follow ISO 7-1. The factory certificates can be seen in the standards and certifications section on this page.

How can you tell a genuine TUPY Brazil Fire Protection Tee?

On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even. The surest check is to weigh the piece and compare it with the weight table on this page; counterfeit pieces usually come out lighter than the official catalogue weight.
