The reducing M/F piece combines two functions: an external thread at one end and an internal thread at the other, in two different diameters. It continues the run in the same line but changes the size.
This piece is needed where both the thread type and the size have to change — a situation that comes up constantly when connecting to valves, meters and measuring equipment. Without it, a reducer and a socket have to be combined.
Because one end is male, the seal is made on the external thread and it demands the same care as a nipple; the female end, meanwhile, receives the next piece.
The TUPY reducing M/F piece is supplied as figure 246: malleable cast iron with a BSP thread to EN 10242 and ISO 49, in size combinations from 3/4in to 2in.
The TUPY Brazil Reducing M/F Piece is made in 14 sizes, from 3/8"×1/4" to 2"×1.1/2". The full list of sizes, with the dimensions in millimetres and the weight of each piece, is in the dimensions and weights table on this page.
The weight depends on the size: the 1.1/4"×3/4" size, for example, weighs 0.220 kg galvanised and 0.183 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.
TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.
The figure 270 socket is female at both ends and joins two pipes of the same diameter; its reducing version is figure 240. The figure 280 nipple is male at both ends and joins two female parts; its reducing version is figure 245. The figure 241 reducer is male at one end and female at the other and screws inside a socket or a tee to bring the diameter down. The figure 529A M/F extension piece is longer and acts as a connector; its reducing version is figure 246.
According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.
