The TUPY Brazil right and left socket (figure 271) has a right-hand thread at one end and a left-hand thread at the other. Turning the socket itself draws the two pipes together or apart, without either pipe having to rotate.

Sometimes a line has to be closed between two fixed points — between two anchored items of plant, or at the end of a run already installed. In that situation the pipe cannot be turned to make up the thread, and an ordinary connection is effectively impossible.
The right and left socket is made for exactly that. Because one end is right-hand and the other left-hand, turning the socket engages both threads at once. Along with the union, it is one of the two standard ways of closing a line between two fixed points — the difference being that it is more compact and lighter.
The left-hand end is normally marked on the body with a groove or a mark so it is not confused with a plain socket.
The material is blackheart malleable cast iron to grade JMB 350-10, supplied in two finishes, hot-dip galvanised and black.

For temperatures outside that interval, use the catalogue pressure-temperature table and confirm suitability for the application. The catalogue lists hydrostatic design-test pressures of 100 bar for other fittings from 1/4 in to 4 in, 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in, and 37.5 bar for joints. These are test values, not working-pressure ratings. Confirm the applicable fitting, temperature range and project requirements before selection.
The TUPY Right & Left Socket is manufactured to ISO/EN/NBR M2 R-L. TUPY malleable cast iron fittings are built to ISO 49, EN 10242 and ABNT NBR 6943, and their threads follow ISO 7-1. Check the current figure- and size-specific listing before relying on an approval.
Where dimensions permit, genuine TUPY fittings carry cast markings such as the factory mark and nominal size. Check the figure-specific catalogue and packaging as well. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even.
