The TUPY Brazil right and left socket (figure 271) has a right-hand thread at one end and a left-hand thread at the other. Turning the socket itself draws the two pipes together or apart, without either pipe having to rotate.

Sometimes a line has to be closed between two fixed points — between two anchored items of plant, or at the end of a run already installed. In that situation the pipe cannot be turned to make up the thread, and an ordinary connection is effectively impossible.
The right and left socket is made for exactly that. Because one end is right-hand and the other left-hand, turning the socket engages both threads at once. Along with the union, it is one of the two standard ways of closing a line between two fixed points — the difference being that it is more compact and lighter.
The left-hand end is normally marked on the body with a groove or a mark so it is not confused with a plain socket.
The material is blackheart malleable cast iron to grade JMB 350-10, supplied in two finishes, hot-dip galvanised and black.
Dimensions and weights by size: ⅜in code 1236003, a = 30, z1 = 10 mm; ½in code 1236004, a = 36, z1 = 10; ¾in code 1236006, a = 39, z1 = 9; 1in code 1236007, a = 45, z1 = 11; 1¼in code 1236008, a = 50, z1 = 12; 1½in code 1236009, a = 55, z1 = 17; and 2in code 1236010, a = 65, z1 = 17 mm. Galvanised weight runs from 0.043 to 0.430 kg.
The TUPY Brazil Right & Left Socket is made in 7 sizes, from 3/8" to 2". The full list of sizes, with the dimensions in millimetres and the weight of each piece, is in the dimensions and weights table on this page.
The weight depends on the size: the 1" size, for example, weighs 0.176 kg galvanised and 0.171 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.
TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.
According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.
The TUPY Right & Left Socket is manufactured to ISO/EN/NBR M2 R-L. TUPY malleable cast iron fittings are built to ISO 49, EN 10242 and ABNT NBR 6943, and their threads follow ISO 7-1. The factory certificates can be seen in the standards and certifications section on this page.
On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even. The surest check is to weigh the piece and compare it with the weight table on this page; counterfeit pieces usually come out lighter than the official catalogue weight.
