About the Socket

The socket — a short sleeve with a female thread at each end — is used to join two pipe ends of the same diameter. It is the simplest fitting in the range and, for that reason, the one used in the greatest numbers on any project.

A simple shape does not make it unimportant. Because the socket sits directly in the flow path and the thread engagement in it is short, any error in thread pitch or angle shows up quickly as a leak. The length of thread engagement and its uniformity determine the quality of a socket.

The TUPY socket is supplied as figure 270; it is cast in malleable iron (MI) and its threads are machined to BSP, based on EN 10242 and ISO 49.

The galvanised type suits water lines and damp environments, the black type steam and oil. Sizes 1/4in to 6in.

The figure 270 socket is female at both ends and joins two pipes of the same diameter; its reducing version is figure 240. The figure 280 nipple is male at both ends and joins two female parts; its reducing version is figure 245. The figure 241 reducer is male at one end and female at the other and screws inside a socket or a tee to bring the diameter down. The figure 529A M/F extension piece is longer and acts as a connector; its reducing version is figure 246.

What is the maximum working pressure and temperature of TUPY fittings?

According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.
