The 90° elbow is one of the most widely used threaded fittings in building services and industrial installations. Its job is to turn the flow of the medium through 90°, without significant pressure loss and without creating a weak point in the pipeline.
The TUPY Brazil 90° elbow is identified by figure 90 and is cast in malleable iron (MI). Unlike grey cast iron, which is brittle under impact, malleable iron can deform plastically: under impact, vibration and the stresses caused by thermal expansion it yields slightly instead of fracturing. That property is what makes this fitting suitable for gas lines, steam lines and fire protection networks.
The threads of the TUPY 90° elbow are machined to BSP, based on EN 10242 and ISO 49. Thread accuracy is decisive in these fittings: a thread with the wrong pitch or an uneven angle will develop a leak over time even when it has been sealed properly.
The fitting is supplied in two finishes. The galvanised type is hot-dip coated and suits drinking water lines, damp environments and outdoor runs. The black (uncoated) type is used on steam and oil lines and on runs that are not exposed to moisture.
The TUPY Brazil 90° elbow is available in sizes 1/4in to 6in and withstands a working pressure of up to 25 bar and temperatures up to 300°C.

The weight depends on the size: the 1" size, for example, weighs 0.210 kg galvanised and 0.202 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.
TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.
The figure 90 elbow turns the pipe run through 90° and is female at both ends. The figure 120 45° elbow is used for a gentler change of direction and a lower pressure drop. The figure 90R reducing elbow has two ends of different diameter, so it changes direction and diameter in one fitting. The figure 92 street elbow is male at one end and female at the other and screws straight into the next fitting without a socket; its 45° version is figure 121.
According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.

On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even.
