About the Long Bend, F/F

The long bend, unlike an elbow, turns the run gradually on a long radius. Both of its ends are female threaded.

The main difference from a 90° elbow is how the flow behaves. An elbow breaks the run at a single point and creates turbulence and a local pressure loss there; a bend guides the flow along an arc. The result is less pressure loss, less noise and less erosion of the wall.

For that reason the bend is preferred to the elbow on pumped lines, on high-velocity runs and wherever water hammer is a concern. In exchange it takes up more space.

The TUPY long bend is supplied as figure 3; it is cast in malleable iron (MI) and the threads are machined to BSP, based on EN 10242 and ISO 49. It is available galvanised and black, in sizes 1/2in to 2in.
