About the Reducer (M/F Bushing)

The reducer, or M/F bushing, is a short piece with an external thread at one end and an internal thread at the other. Its job is to reduce the size at a joint without adding length to the run.

That is exactly what distinguishes it from the reducing socket: a reducing socket brings two pipes together, whereas a reducer is screwed into an existing fitting — a tee or a valve, say — to make its port smaller. It is therefore short, and its body is usually hexagonal so that it can be tightened with a spanner.

This piece is used a great deal in building services, because it allows standard equipment to be run with smaller branches.

The TUPY reducer is supplied as figure 241: malleable cast iron, BSP thread to EN 10242, galvanised and black.

Frequently asked questions about the Reducer (M/F Bushing)

In which sizes is the TUPY Brazil Reducer (M/F Bushing) made?

The TUPY Brazil Reducer (M/F Bushing) is made in 34 sizes, from 3/8"×1/4" to 6"×5". The full list of sizes, with the dimensions in millimetres and the weight of each piece, is in the dimensions and weights table on this page.

How much does one TUPY Reducer (M/F Bushing) weigh?

The weight depends on the size: the 2"×3/4" size, for example, weighs 0.389 kg galvanised and 0.381 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.

Is the thread on the TUPY Reducer (M/F Bushing) BSP or NPT?

TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.

What is the difference between the socket, the nipple, the reducer and the M/F extension piece?

The figure 270 socket is female at both ends and joins two pipes of the same diameter; its reducing version is figure 240. The figure 280 nipple is male at both ends and joins two female parts; its reducing version is figure 245. The figure 241 reducer is male at one end and female at the other and screws inside a socket or a tee to bring the diameter down. The figure 529A M/F extension piece is longer and acts as a connector; its reducing version is figure 246.

What is the maximum working pressure and temperature of TUPY fittings?

According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.

To which standards is the TUPY Reducer (M/F Bushing) manufactured?

The TUPY Reducer (M/F Bushing) is manufactured to EN 10242 / ISO 49. TUPY malleable cast iron fittings are built to ISO 49, EN 10242 and ABNT NBR 6943, and their threads follow ISO 7-1. The factory certificates can be seen in the standards and certifications section on this page.

How can you tell a genuine TUPY Brazil Reducer (M/F Bushing)?

On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even. The surest check is to weigh the piece and compare it with the weight table on this page; counterfeit pieces usually come out lighter than the official catalogue weight.
