Compressed air is generated at cost and lost through joints. TUPY Brazil threaded fittings in malleable cast iron seal on the thread itself, are rated at 25 bar, and come apart for modification without cutting the line — which is what a workshop ring main is eventually asked to do.
The threaded BSP and NPT lines are rated at 25 bar from -20 to +120 °C, a wide margin over the 7 to 13 bar a typical industrial compressor delivers. Sizes run 1/4 inch to 6 inch across the full set of figures, so headers, drops, branches and drain legs are all built from one range.
Where the TUPYPRES press system is used, compressed air is rated at 10 bar up to 80 °C on steel pipe.
Air leaving a compressor is hot and wet, and the water drops out further down the line. That condensate is what corrodes an air main from the inside, so hot-dip galvanised fittings to ISO 1461 and ABNT NBR 6323 are the sensible specification anywhere the line is not fed by a dryer — and in Gulf ambient conditions, that is most installations.
Black (oiled) fittings are supplied for dry, indoor service where a dryer is fitted.
The advantage of a threaded joint on compressed air is rarely the first installation; it is the fourth modification. A union or a socket can be broken and remade to add a drop or move a machine without hot work, without a permit, and without shutting a whole shop down.
TUPY does not approve welding of its fittings, and on an air main there is no reason to: the joint is designed to be made up and taken apart.
