About the M/F Extension Piece

The M/F extension piece is a straight fitting with an external (male) thread at one end and an internal (female) thread at the other.

It is used where a run has to be extended in the same line but the two existing ends are not both female or both male. Without this piece, a socket and a nipple have to be combined — two fittings instead of one, and an extra leak point.

It is also used a great deal to increase thread engagement when connecting to equipment, or to stand a valve off a wall.

The TUPY M/F extension piece is supplied as figure 529A: malleable cast iron with a BSP thread to EN 10242 and ISO 49, galvanised and black.

Frequently asked questions about the M/F Extension Piece

In which sizes is the TUPY Brazil M/F Extension Piece made?

The TUPY Brazil M/F Extension Piece is made in 4 sizes, from 1/2" to 1.1/4". The full list of sizes, with the dimensions in millimetres and the weight of each piece, is in the dimensions and weights table on this page.

How much does one TUPY M/F Extension Piece weigh?

The weight depends on the size: the 1" size, for example, weighs 0.166 kg galvanised and 0.165 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.

Is the thread on the TUPY M/F Extension Piece BSP or NPT?

TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.

What is the difference between the socket, the nipple, the reducer and the M/F extension piece?

The figure 270 socket is female at both ends and joins two pipes of the same diameter; its reducing version is figure 240. The figure 280 nipple is male at both ends and joins two female parts; its reducing version is figure 245. The figure 241 reducer is male at one end and female at the other and screws inside a socket or a tee to bring the diameter down. The figure 529A M/F extension piece is longer and acts as a connector; its reducing version is figure 246.

What is the maximum working pressure and temperature of TUPY fittings?

According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.

To which standards is the TUPY M/F Extension Piece manufactured?

The TUPY M/F Extension Piece is manufactured to EN 10242 / ISO 49. TUPY malleable cast iron fittings are built to ISO 49, EN 10242 and ABNT NBR 6943, and their threads follow ISO 7-1. The factory certificates can be seen in the standards and certifications section on this page.

How can you tell a genuine TUPY Brazil M/F Extension Piece?

On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even. The surest check is to weigh the piece and compare it with the weight table on this page; counterfeit pieces usually come out lighter than the official catalogue weight.
