The reducing elbow does two jobs at once: a 90° change of direction and a reduction in diameter. Both of its ports are female threaded, but they are not the same size.
The alternative is an ordinary elbow together with a reducer — one more fitting, one more thread to seal and more length in the run. In tight plant rooms and behind manifolds, those few centimetres decide the layout.
Because the change of diameter happens exactly at the change of direction, the flow both turns and accelerates in this fitting. Casting uniformity on the inside of the bend determines the pressure loss and the durability of the piece.
The TUPY reducing elbow is supplied as figure 90R: malleable cast iron with a BSP thread to EN 10242 and ISO 49, in size combinations from 1/2in to 2in.
The TUPY Brazil Reducing Elbow is made in 14 sizes, from 3/8"×1/4" to 2.1/2"×2". The full list of sizes, with the dimensions in millimetres and the weight of each piece, is in the dimensions and weights table on this page.
The weight depends on the size: the 1.1/4"×3/4" size, for example, weighs 0.224 kg galvanised and 0.215 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.
TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.
The figure 90 elbow turns the pipe run through 90° and is female at both ends. The figure 120 45° elbow is used for a gentler change of direction and a lower pressure drop. The figure 90R reducing elbow has two ends of different diameter, so it changes direction and diameter in one fitting. The figure 92 street elbow is male at one end and female at the other and screws straight into the next fitting without a socket; its 45° version is figure 121.
According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.

On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even.
