Pipe fittings for water and plumbing

TUPY Brazil threaded fittings are approved for drinking water networks: the materials used in them meet the parameters of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. They are used for hot and cold water throughout building services, municipal distribution and sanitary plumbing, indoors and buried, across the Gulf and Iraq.

Approved for potable water

Not every iron fitting may be put on a drinking water line. TUPY BSP fittings are approved for drinking water networks because the materials in them meet the Brazilian Ministry of Health parameters, and they additionally hold DVGW approval, which covers water products to European standards.

For potable and buried work the fittings are supplied hot-dip galvanised to ISO 1461 and ABNT NBR 6323. The zinc and the base metal fuse at temperature, so the coating is metallurgically bonded rather than merely applied, and does not flake off when the fitting is wrenched up.

Indoor plumbing and sanitary installations

On indoor plumbing — risers, branches, manifolds and sanitary connections — the threaded joint remains the quickest to make up and the easiest to take apart for maintenance. Black (oiled) fittings are used on dry indoor runs; galvanised is the normal specification anywhere condensation, humidity or coastal air reaches, which in practice is most of the Gulf.

Sizes run from 1/4 inch to 6 inch across the full range of figures — elbows, tees, sockets, unions, reducers, plugs and caps — so a whole installation can be built from one source with one certificate behind it.

Hot water and working pressure

The threaded fittings are rated at 25 bar from -20 to +120 °C, which covers domestic and commercial hot water with a wide margin; system design should still allow a safety factor of at least four times the maximum working pressure. Each fitting is hydrostatically tested at 100 bar in sizes 1/8 to 4 inch, and 64 bar in 5 and 6 inch.

Where TUPYPRES is used, water is rated at 16 bar up to 80 °C on steel pipe, and 16 bar on both PE100 and PEX.

Are these fittings safe for drinking water?

Galvanised or black for a water line?

Galvanised, in almost every case. Hot-dip galvanising to ISO 1461 is what protects the fitting where water, condensation or humid coastal air is present. Black fittings are for dry indoor service only.

What temperature can they take?

25 bar is permitted from -20 up to +120 °C, so ordinary hot water service is well inside the rating.

Can they be used on buried municipal lines?

Yes, galvanised, and the same drinking water approval applies. For buried work the ductility of malleable iron matters: it deforms under ground movement rather than cracking.
