The same fitting has three names on a Gulf site: the English name on the drawing, the Arabic trade name the storekeeper and plumber use, and a figure number in the manufacturer's catalogue. Orders go wrong when those three are not matched. This glossary puts them side by side for the threaded malleable iron fittings used in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain, with the TUPY figure for each in BSP and NPT.
Pipe fitting names: English, Arabic and TUPY figure
| Fitting (English) | Name in the Gulf market (Arabic) | What it does | TUPY BSP | TUPY NPT (Class 300 / 150) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 90° elbow | كوع 90 (كوع) | Turns the line through a right angle. | Figure 90 | 2015 / 1015 |
| 45° elbow | كوع 45 (كوع نص) | Turns the line through 45°. | — | 2025 / 1025 |
| Street elbow (male–female elbow) | كوع ذكر-أنثى (كوع داخلي خارجي) | An elbow with one male and one female end, so it screws straight into another fitting. | Figure 121 (45°) | 2030 / 1030 |
| Long sweep bend | كوع انحناء طويل (بند) | A gentler bend with a larger radius and less pressure loss. | Figure 1 (M-F bend) | 2033 |
| Return bend | كوع 180 (كوع U) | Turns the line back on itself, 180°. | Figure 60 | — |
| Tee | تي (تيه) | Takes a branch off the main line at 90°. | — | 2060 / 1060 |
| Reducing tee | تي مسلوب (تي تخفيض) | A tee whose branch is smaller than the run. | — | 2065R / 1065R |
| Cross | صليبة (كروس) | Four-way junction: two branches off one line. | Figure 180 | 1068 |
| Socket (coupling) | جلبة (وصلة مستقيمة / سوكيت) | Joins two pipes of the same size in a straight line. | — | 2045 / 1045 |
| Reducing socket | جلبة مسلوبة (جلبة تخفيض) | Joins two pipes of different sizes. | — | 2050R / 1050R |
| Nipple | نبل (نيبل) | A short length with a male thread at both ends, to join two female fittings. | Figure 280 | 2001 |
| Union | يونيون (رقبة) | A three-piece joint that can be undone without turning the pipe — for valves, pumps and meters. | Figure 340 | 2070 / 1070 |
| Reducing bush | بوش تخفيض (جلبة مسلوبة داخلية) | Screws into a larger female thread to take a smaller one. | — | 1002R |
| Plug | سدادة ذكر (طبة ذكر) | Closes a female outlet. | — | 1010 |
| Cap | طبة (غطاء) | Closes the male end of a pipe. | Figure 300 | 2055 / 1055 |
| Lock nut (back nut) | صامولة (لوك نت) | Locks a long-thread connection, for example at a tank. | Figure 312 | — |
Figures link to the product page with sizes, dimensions and weights. Where a cell shows a dash, that form is quoted on request; the full list is in the figure number cross-reference.
Changing direction: elbows and bends
An elbow (كوع) turns the line through 90° or 45°. A street elbow has one male end, so it screws directly into another fitting without a nipple. A bend does the same job with a larger radius and less pressure loss, which matters on long runs and on fire lines.
Branching: tees and crosses
A tee (تي) takes one branch off the main line; a reducing tee has a smaller branch. A cross (صليبة) takes two. On orders, give the run size first and then the branch, for example 1″ × 1″ × 1/2″.
Joining and reducing: sockets, nipples, bushes and unions
A socket (جلبة) joins two pipes; a reducing socket joins two sizes. A nipple (نبل) joins two female fittings. A bush (بوش) steps a female thread down a size. A union (يونيون) can be undone without turning the pipe, so it goes next to valves, pumps and meters that will need to come out.
Closing a line: plugs and caps
A plug (سدادة ذكر) closes a female outlet; a cap (طبة) closes the male end of a pipe.
