What exactly is malleable cast iron?
Malleable cast iron is a cast iron that, after casting, spends hours in a furnace under heat treatment. During that process the carbon, which in ordinary cast iron is spread through the metal as graphite flakes, is converted into rounded clusters.
This change in the microscopic structure completely alters the mechanical behaviour of the material. The graphite flakes in grey cast iron act like pre-existing cracks; when a load is applied, the crack starts from one of them and the material breaks suddenly. Once the carbon has been rounded, those crack initiation points are removed.
The difference in numbers
The tensile strength is roughly 60 per cent higher — but the decisive figure is the second column: elongation at fracture. Malleable cast iron stretches by about 5 per cent before it ruptures; grey cast iron by less than one per cent.
The practical meaning of that number is simple: malleable cast iron gives warning before it breaks. It deforms, it leaks, it can be seen. Grey cast iron breaks with no preliminaries.
Why for pipe fittings?
- Installation torque: every threaded fitting is put under torsion as it is tightened. A brittle material cracks at this stage.
- Water hammer: the sudden closing of a valve creates a pressure wave in the line several times the working pressure.
- Vibration: in plant rooms and industrial lines, constant vibration gradually fatigues a brittle material.
- Building settlement: a few millimetres of movement in the structure applies a bending stress to the fitting.
- Thread accuracy: a tough material allows the thread to be machined to a high accuracy without the edges crumbling.
Malleable cast iron, ductile iron or steel?

For threaded fittings in the 1/4 to 6 inch range, malleable cast iron is the right balance between toughness, thread machinability and cost. That is why EN 10242 and ASME B16.3 are both written around this material.
How do you tell whether a fitting really is malleable?
- On reputable fittings, the manufacturer name and often the material grade are cast into the body.
- The fracture surface of a malleable fitting is a velvety grey; in grey cast iron it is bright and granular.
- The weight of the part should match the catalogue table — a lighter fitting means a thinner wall.
- The data sheet should reference EN 1562 or an equivalent standard.
Summary
Malleable cast iron has become the standard material for pipe fittings because its behaviour is predictable at the critical moment. The cost difference against cheaper options is real, but what you are buying is the capacity to survive abnormal conditions — and a piping system sooner or later meets abnormal conditions.
