UL Listed and FM Approved Fittings for Sprinkler Work Under NFPA 13

Fire protection is the one application where a fittings submittal gets read line by line. Everywhere else, “malleable iron to EN 10242” will pass. On a sprinkler system, someone is going to ask which listing covers the specific item you have supplied, in the specific size, and expect to see it.

Gulf projects are very often written to NFPA, so this is a guide to what NFPA 13 actually asks of a fitting, what UL Listing and FM Approval each mean, and how to evidence them without ending up in an argument two weeks before handover.

What NFPA 13 asks for

NFPA 13 is the standard for the installation of sprinkler systems. Its position on components is straightforward: the parts that make up the system are to be listed or approved for fire protection service. It is not enough that a fitting is well made or that it meets a general piping standard. It has to have been assessed by a recognised body specifically for this use.

That single requirement is where most of the confusion in the region comes from, because two different bodies do that assessing and their vocabulary is not interchangeable.

A product can carry one, both, or neither. Neither one automatically implies the other, and a specification that names one of them has not implicitly accepted the other. If a spec says FM Approved and you supply something that is UL Listed but not FM Approved, you have not met it — however good the fitting is.

The two are also not interchangeable in the other direction. Reading “UL/FM” on a datasheet as a single combined mark is a common mistake; it is shorthand for two separate assessments that a product may hold in part.

The distinction that causes the most trouble

Listings and approvals are granted product by product, not brand by brand.

A manufacturer that holds an approval holds it for named items in named sizes, made at named facilities. It does not extend to the whole catalogue by association. So the statement “this brand is FM Approved” is close to meaningless on a submittal; the question is always whether this figure, in this size appears on the certificate.

This is worth internalising because it cuts both ways. It is entirely normal and legitimate for a manufacturer to hold approvals on the figures used in fire work — elbows, tees, couplings, reducers in the relevant sizes — and not on figures that have no business in a sprinkler system. That is not a gap in the range. It is what a scope of approval looks like.

Malleable iron in a sprinkler system

Threaded malleable iron fittings have a defined place in sprinkler work: the smaller threaded pipework, typically the branch lines and armovers rather than the large mains, which are more usually grooved or welded above a certain size.

The material argument is the same one that applies everywhere else, with the stakes raised. Malleable iron's elongation — a minimum of 10 per cent in grade JMB 350-10 — means it deforms before it fractures. In a system that may sit untouched for twenty years and then be asked to hold pressure during a fire, with thermal movement and the shock of a pump starting, a material that yields rather than shatters is the point. The difference between malleable, ductile and grey cast iron is set out here, and grey cast iron in particular has no place in this application.

Pressure, and where 25 bar comes from

TUPY threaded fittings are rated to a maximum working pressure of 25 bar up to 120 °C. For sprinkler work that is a comfortable margin over the pressures most systems run at, but the number to check is not the static system pressure — it is what the system sees when the fire pump starts and when it shuts down.

Surge is the reason to look at the rating rather than assume it. A tall building with a pump at the bottom, or a system with a long horizontal run and a fast-closing valve, can put transient pressures through the pipework well above the working figure. That is a hydraulic question rather than a fittings question, but it is the one that decides whether the rating is adequate.

Threads on fire work in the Gulf

Most Gulf fire protection is written to BSP, following EN 10242 and ISO 49. NPT to ANSI B16.3 turns up where the project or the package has been specified by an American engineering contractor, which happens more on industrial and oil and gas sites than on buildings.

The risk is a mixed project: a building written to BSP with a plant package inside it written to NPT. The threads do not mate, they will start together and feel as though they are engaging, and on a fire system that is not a defect anyone wants to find during commissioning. Building a submittal that gets approved first time

  1. Read what the specification actually says. UL Listed, FM Approved, or both — and whether it names a standard the fitting must be manufactured to as well.
  2. Match figure numbers, not descriptions. Descriptions vary between suppliers; figure numbers do not. The cross-reference lists every figure with its trade names.
  3. Check the size is within the scope. An approval covering a figure up to a certain size does not cover the size above it.
  4. Attach the evidence, not the assertion. The listing or approval reference for the items you are actually supplying.
  5. Include the material certification alongside. The grade and the manufacturing standard, traceable to the goods.
  6. Check the thread standard against the drawings package by package, not once at tender.

In short

  • NFPA 13 asks for components listed or approved for fire protection service — a general piping standard is not enough.
  • UL Listed and FM Approved are two separate assessments by two separate bodies. One does not imply the other.
  • Approvals attach to figures and sizes, not to brands. Evidence the item, not the name.
  • Malleable iron belongs in threaded branch work; its elongation is why.
  • Check the rating against surge, not static pressure.
  • Confirm BSP or NPT for every package on a mixed project.
