O cotovelo de redução faz dois serviços ao mesmo tempo: uma mudança de direção de 90° e uma redução de diâmetro. Seus dois bocais têm rosca fêmea, mas não são do mesmo tamanho.
A alternativa é um cotovelo comum com uma bucha de redução — mais uma conexão, mais uma rosca a vedar e mais comprimento no trecho. Em casas de máquinas apertadas e atrás de barriletes, esses poucos centímetros decidem o traçado.
Como a mudança de diâmetro acontece exatamente na mudança de direção, nesta conexão o escoamento gira e acelera ao mesmo tempo. A uniformidade da fundição na parte interna da curva determina a perda de carga e a durabilidade da peça.
O cotovelo de redução TUPY é fornecido como figura 90R: ferro fundido maleável com rosca BSP conforme EN 10242 e ISO 49, em combinações de bitolas de 1/2pol a 2pol.

The weight depends on the size: the 1.1/4"×3/4" size, for example, weighs 0.224 kg galvanised and 0.215 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.
TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.
The figure 90 elbow turns the pipe run through 90° and is female at both ends. The figure 120 45° elbow is used for a gentler change of direction and a lower pressure drop. The figure 90R reducing elbow has two ends of different diameter, so it changes direction and diameter in one fitting. The figure 92 street elbow is male at one end and female at the other and screws straight into the next fitting without a socket; its 45° version is figure 121.
According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.

On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even.
