Como um niple comum, o niple de redução tem rosca externa nas duas pontas, exceto que as duas pontas não têm o mesmo diâmetro. É usado para ligar duas peças de bocal fêmea de tamanhos diferentes — uma válvula de 1pol a uma luva de 1/2pol, por exemplo.
Sem esta peça seria preciso combinar um niple e uma bucha de redução: duas peças, dois pontos de vedação e mais comprimento. O niple de redução faz tudo isso numa peça só e, por ter o corpo fundido inteiriço, não tem ponto fraco mecânico no meio.
Como num niple comum, a vedação é feita na rosca externa, de modo que a qualidade de usinagem das duas pontas e sua concentricidade importam diretamente. Qualquer desalinhamento faz a peça assentar torta e vazar.
O niple de redução TUPY é fornecido como figura 245: ferro fundido maleável, rosca BSP conforme EN 10242 e ISO 49.

The weight depends on the size: the 1.1/2"×3/4" size, for example, weighs 0.249 kg galvanised and 0.236 kg black. The weights of every size are taken from the official TUPY catalogue and are listed in the table on this page, so they can be used to work out shipping weight and freight cost.
TUPYBSP fittings are threaded to BSP in accordance with ISO 7-1; the male thread is tapered and the seal is made on the thread itself. BSP is not interchangeable with NPT, and screwing the two together will leak. TUPY also produces a separate NPT line, which is covered in the downloads section.
The figure 270 socket is female at both ends and joins two pipes of the same diameter; its reducing version is figure 240. The figure 280 nipple is male at both ends and joins two female parts; its reducing version is figure 245. The figure 241 reducer is male at one end and female at the other and screws inside a socket or a tee to bring the diameter down. The figure 529A M/F extension piece is longer and acts as a connector; its reducing version is figure 246.
According to TUPY's technical catalogue, the working pressure of TUPYBSP fittings is 25 bar between −20 °C and +120 °C. It falls to 20 bar above 300 °C, and intermediate values are interpolated. The design pressure in the hydrostatic test is 100 bar for sizes up to 4 in and 64 bar for 5 in and 6 in.
The TUPY Niple de Redução is manufactured to EN 10242 / ISO 49. TUPY malleable cast iron fittings are built to ISO 49, EN 10242 and ABNT NBR 6943, and their threads follow ISO 7-1. The factory certificates can be seen in the standards and certifications section on this page.
On the body of every genuine TUPY fitting the factory mark, the figure number and the size are raised in the casting, not etched or printed. The threads are clean and free of burrs, and the galvanised coating is even.
