Um tê comum não é recomendado para misturar água quente e fria: num tê de 90° as duas correntes se enfrentam e a água quente pode ser empurrada de volta para a linha de fria, ou o contrário. O cotovelo com saída lateral resolve isso — as duas pernas de entrada se encontram numa curva suave e o escoamento combinado sai por baixo.
